Alternative Spring Break fundraisers
Organizers from Concordia’s Alternative Spring Break project are holding two fundraising events to help students make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate.
First introduced in 2010, the Alternative Spring Break offers students the opportunity to volunteer alongside individuals and organizations in communities in Montreal and far away over reading week, this year February 19 to 26.
The goal is hands-on interaction outside the classroom that will foster the experience of being an engaged citizen. In turn, the experience will benefit the students’ academic and career paths, as well as their personal lives.
This year, 60 participants will be venturing to Peru, the Dominican Republic and New Orleans, as well as staying here in Montreal to volunteer with various non-governmental organizations and humanitarian efforts.
The price for the initiative, ranging from $200 for the Montreal placement to $2,100 for Peru, is borne by the individual participant.
On Friday, February 11, comedian Phil Shuchat will be performing at the Comedy Nest in the Pepsi Forum (2313 St. Catherine St. W.). Shuchat, who has established a reputation as one of Canada’s funniest and fastest-rising stars, has had multiple appearances at the Just for Laughs Festival, on The Comedy Network’s Comedy at Club 54 and much more. His first CD, Animated, was released in 2006. Tickets are $15.
The following night, Saturday, February 12, at Tonic Club Lounge, also in the Pepsi Forum, there will be a special Valentine’s Day event, featuring the music of DJ Short Cut and DJ Arabika, as well as complimentary red roses and chocolate. Tickets are $10, and include one free drink.
