Co-op program receives federal funds
Concordia’s Institute for Co-operative Education has been named one of 17 organizations to help deliver Industry Canada’s Small Business Internship Program (SBIP). On March 11, 2011, Minister of State for Small Business and Tourism Rob Moore and Senator Larry Smith held a press conference at the John Molson School of Business to make the announcement.
The federal government has maintained its $3.5-million investment in SBIP in 2011, designated the Year of the Entrepreneur, creating 400 internships countrywide for college and university students. Concordia’s Co-op will receive funds to help identify and manage some of those internships through its programs.
“Our government’s top priority is the economy,” said Moore. “Today’s investment in the SBIP is one of the ways government can help entrepreneurs while creating jobs for post-secondary students in the information and communications technologies and e-commerce sectors. These young Canadians will gain valuable work experience while contributing to Canada’s economic recovery.”
The interns will work to enhance small and medium-sized enterprises’ e-business capacity beyond simple email communications and web pages into more thorough e-business models.
“This announcement is recognition of our Institute for Co-operative Education’s expertise in coordinating internships, and will be of benefit both to small business and to Concordia students,” said Russell Copeman, Concordia’s Associate Vice-President, Government Relations.
