Responding to the tragedy in Japan
The Concordia community is deeply concerned about the tragic situation in Japan. The earthquake and tsunami have caused widespread devastation, loss of life and damage to Japan’s infrastructure, including its nuclear installations.
Concordia’s International Students Office (ISO) has contacted all registered students from Japan to inform them of the university resources available to help students contact loved ones back home, and gain access to dedicated campus counselling services and support. The ISO is also looking into facilitating a Japanese-language support group.
The university has been in touch with two exchange students currently in Japan and we have been assured that they are safe. A third student who was planning to leave Montreal for Japan has been advised to delay departure until the situation stabilizes.
“Concordia extends its sympathy to our students, faculty and staff with ties to Japan,” says Fred Lowy, President and Vice-Chancellor. “As a university community, I know that we will strongly support Concordians affected by the disaster and I encourage everyone to contribute in any way they can to relief and fundraising efforts.”
During natural disasters and similar events, Concordia’s Emergency Management team coordinates with Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada, insurance providers and others to respond to the needs of Concordia students or professors as they arise. That is why the university requires all students, faculty or staff travelling for research, conferences, academic or university-related projects to register their whereabouts through the MyConcordia Portal. This information can be used to help contact any Concordia member in the event of an international disaster.

Financial Aid and Awards (FAAO) advisors are available to discuss your needs should your financial situation require attention following the crisis. FAAO is located in the Guy-Metro Building (GM), 1550 De Maisonneuve Blvd.W., room 220.
Staff at Multi-faith Chaplaincy will be glad to see students who need to talk. If you have a short-term financial difficulty, it can also draw on funds from the Student Emergency and Food Fund. Multi-faith Chaplaincy is located in Annex Z, room 02, 2090 Mackay, across from the Hall Building.
Health Services is also available should you require medical assistance (SGW Campus - GM-200 and Loyola Campus - Administration Building (AD) room 103, 7141 Sherbrooke West).
