Accelerating careers for 25 years
The John Molson School of Business’s Executive MBA (EMBA) is celebrating a quarter of a century this year. The groundbreaking program was introduced by Concordia University in 1985, making it the first in the province.
Over the years, more than 750 highly networked alumni have graduated. Among them are senior managers, vice-presidents and presidents of local, national and international companies from all industries. EMBA director Christopher Ross says, “many graduates have been promoted while enrolled in the program or have moved on to more prestigious positions shortly after graduation.”
The EMBA was specifically designed for mid-career managers, executives and senior professionals who wish to pursue a graduate level business degree without disrupting their career. It provides students with a solid foundation in all core business disciplines and the skills necessary to assume leadership roles within all levels or any organization.
The program is held over a period of 20-months with two Christmas breaks (one month each) and one summer break (three months). Actual time in class is 15 months.
Ross says that students “career opportunities are broadened” because the concepts they learn each week are immediately applicable in their careers. Ross explains, “The students learn the tools to be successful in business but also how to inspire their staff and to be effective leaders.”
Ross says companies benefit from supporting their employees in the program. In one instance, he says, “a first-year EMBA student from a Fortune Global 500 company applied a pricing strategy learned in the program to gain more volume in commodity sales. As a result, the company that student was working for gained more than $4 million in annual sales of the product.”
Leading news organizations have recognized the value and quality of the program, its curriculum and professors. The Financial Times of London consistently ranked it number 1 in the province from 2001 to 2009.
