Giller Prize winner reads
Six years ago, Johanna Skibsrud submitted a novel-to-be as her thesis to complete her MA in Creative Writing at Concordia University.
She returns on April 8 with that thesis transformed in the 2010 Scotiabank Giller Prize-winning novel The Sentimentalists.
Skibsrud was travelling on a much-anticipated trip with her mother when her win was announced last November. Family is clearly important to her, as The Sentimentalists reveals the complicated relationship between a woman and her Vietnam War veteran father.
Giller Prize judges praised the work describing the writing as “trip-wire taut as the exploration of guilt, family and duty unfolds.” Skibsrud’s win puts her in the company of previous winners including Alice Munro, Mordecai Richler and Margaret Atwood.
The author has also published two books of poetry. She will read from the novel, and be available to sign copies.
When: Friday, April 8, 7:30 p.m.
Where: DeSève Cinema, J.W. McConnell Library Building (1400 De Maisonneuve Blvd. W.)
