Members of Concordia University Emergency Management are encouraging community members to join a collaborative aid effort in response to the floods that have devastated Quebec’s Richelieu Valley.

Concordia University has joined with McGill University to work with the volunteer organization SOS Richelieu to help in cleanup and relief efforts Saturday, June 11. Throughout May, persistent rain and high water levels have flooded more than 3,000 homes displacing 1,000 people.

“While it’s a few kilometres from Montreal, this is still our community and these are our neighbours,” says Concordia Emergency Management Senior Advisor Darren Dumoulin. “When something such as this hits so close to home, I believe we have a responsibility to apply our ability to make a difference.”

Concordia’s Facilities Management will provide transportation to the region a half-hour’s drive southeast of Montreal. As well, Hospitality Concordia will provide box lunches and water for the volunteers.

According to SOS Richelieu, roughly 1,400 people have signed up to participate in the effort as of May 27. The group is hoping to attract 5,000 volunteers.

Those interested in volunteering should check the Emergency Management website regularly for instructions and updates.
