Business students earn awards for their research
Twelve students from Concordia’s John Molson School of Business (JMSB) were recognized at the first Fuller Landau Family Business Awards ceremony on May 17.
Students, both graduate and undergraduate, analyzed the status of various family-based businesses and proposed innovative recommendations and strategy solutions for the businesses’ future success. The most sensible and original entries from three teams shared the honour as well as a monetary prize.
“These awards are a very special way to honour our students who think progressively and creatively to make our community a better place,” said Pramodita Sharma, chair of the awards and the CIBC Distinguished Professor of Family Business at the JMSB.
The inaugural awards ceremony was a collaborative initiative between Fuller Landau LLP, a Canadian firm of chartered accountants and business advisors, and the JMSB.
These prizes aim to celebrate progressive, privately held, Quebec-based family enterprises that have stimulated economic growth and excelled in their contributions to the community.
The recipients of the Best Graduate Student Family Business Paper Award were Isabelle Lusseyran, Mohamed Meskaoui and Franco Reda for developing strategies for Laval-based Les Produits Alimentaires Viau Inc.
For the Undergraduate Student Family Business Paper Award, the prize was jointly granted to two teams. Jordan Brown, Louis-Daniel Bernier, Tania Lancia, Luca Panarello and Marco Panarello, who examined the Boulangerie Patisserie Italia, shared the award with Greta Pelaez Heredia, Momtaz Almossly, Paulo Monteagudo and Tommy Lebel for their case report on O.Noir Restaurant.
“These students have certainly made our family at the JMSB proud,” says Sharma.
“We are happy to be able to help foster the development of students who will be the next generation of entrepreneurs,” says Michael Newton, managing partner of Fuller Landau LLP. “This year’s entries showed a lot of promise and certainly impressed our judges. We look forward to seeing what next year will bring.”
Two Montreal businesses were also honoured for their success, multi-generational family involvement, and innovative business practices.
Financial services firm Pension Planning Centre won the award in the medium business category (25-100 employees or between $1 and $5 million in annual revenue). Automotive dealership company Groupe Park Avenue was the recipient in the large business category (100 full-time employees or over $5 million in annual revenue).
