People planning on serving alcohol, food or beverages at events ranging from bake sales to receptions are encouraged to consult the step-by-step guides posted on the Hospitality Concordia web page.

“Through our new food and alcohol policies, we are standardizing the process for booking food and drink on campus and making this part of our room-booking policy,” explains Acting Vice-President Services, Roger Côté. Event organizers across the university will have a clear set of guidelines, available through the room-booking process, to ensure that their events meet university and government standards.

Food policy

All food sold on campus will comply with the strictest health regulations and be monitored continuously. Food for university-based events can be ordered from a list of 20 approved caterers.

“We’ve put sustainable practices at the top of our list in choosing these campus food vendors. We will be actively promoting eco-friendly products and composting. It is part of the university’s commitment to sustainable business practices and social responsibility,” says Côté.

The food policy will be overseen by the Office of the Vice-President Services, but the day-to-day oversight will be the responsibility of Hospitality Concordia.

Alcohol policy promotes responsibility
“The policy on the sale and service of alcohol on university premises delegates the oversight, implementation and administration to the Concordia University Alcohol Committee (CUAC) and its two subcommittees, who will look at education and procedures,” says Côté. “This is a big step forward in ensuring that the university promotes a responsible attitude, culture and environment concerning the use of alcohol by members of the Concordia community.”

Alcohol policy

The policy outlines the general approach and procedures concerning all aspects of the purchase, sale and consumption of alcohol on campus. It also deals with violations and sanctions. Organizers of events involving the sale or distribution of alcohol will be accountable for enforcement of the policy guidelines which to all student groups, all university personnel and all external groups serving alcohol on university premises.

“What’s new in our approach is accountability and responsibility. Through the application of the policy, the entire university will be compliant with measures set out by the Régie des alcools, des courses et des jeux. The organizers of events where alcohol is served will have the responsibility to ensure that alcohol consumption is monitored and properly controlled,” concludes Côté.

The Office of the Dean of Students will be responsible for the implementation of the policy. All event organizers are encouraged to consult the event planning website early to ensure that deadlines are met and the booking process proceeds smoothly. Updates to both policies will be posted as needed.
