Day of fun on the green builds endowment
Concordians will tee off for fun and charity at the 18th annual Concordia University Memorial Golf Tournament on Wednesday, August 17.
The event has become one of the most popular on the university's social calendar, as golfers of all skill levels socialize and compete in four-person teams. All proceeds will benefit the Concordia Memorial Golf Tournament Bursary Endowment, which provides five $1,000 bursaries to students in financial need every year.
Perry Calce, coordinator of Academic Programs and Curriculum Development at the School of Community and Public Affairs, and a member of the tournament organizing committee, says that the event's popularity is only growing.
"At its inception, the tournament had 70 golfers, and now we're up to 280 participants so far this year. After the Concordia Shuffle, this is probably the event that draws the most members of the Concordia community for an entire day," says Calce.
Organizing committee members also include Petra Alves, Ken Bissonnette, Janet Corrigan, Desmond O'Neill, Tony Patricio, Glenn Weir and Lisa Williamson.
The tournament will be held at the Hemmingford Golf Club. The cost to join is $95 per person for golf plus brunch and dinner and $110 for non-Concordia participants. Anyone may attend just the dinner for $40.

Teams play for trophies; the emphasis is on fun, camaraderie and the love of the game, rather than cut-throat competition.
Nearly $7,000 was raised at last year's event. The endowment also draws funding from raffles and tournament sponsors. Organizers are hoping to start sponsoring a sixth student, either this year or next.
"Fundraising is important, but our principal goal is to bring the Concordia community together for a day of fun in the sun. It's also a chance to meet up with Concordia colleagues and friends that you may not have seen for a while," says Calce.
