Accidental collaborators
The VAV Gallery is kicking off the new school year with Grrls Grrls Grrls, an exhibition of artwork and photography by three studio arts students. Although their work touches on similar themes, Thea Govorchin, Julie Roch-Cuerrier and Carrie Henzie were strangers until the gallery chose their work for the show.
"We got matched together because we were all working with similar content," Govorchin said at the vernissage on Tuesday, September 6. "Imagery of women, both empowered and not; beautiful women, powerful women. Our creations ended up working really well together."
"My work is primarily about icons, both in the past and present day," said Roch-Cuerrier. "I'm examining how we perceive female icons in today's society."
The artists believe that Concordia galleries reflect the great diversity of output from the university's artists.
"Everyone brings something different to the table; there's so much for everyone. In the case of our show, we didn't even know each other, but we happened to be doing work that is strongly connected," says Govorchin.
"The curators did a great job, because our work fits so well together, and they recognized that. If I put together a group show, it probably wouldn't be this diverse and cohesive."
Adds Roch-Cuerrier: "Our work complete each other. This exhibition is stronger for showcasing three different points of view, all on the same subject."
