Every year since 1990, rain or shine, members of Concordia’s community have shuffled to raise funds to support students.

Shuffle 22 is this Friday! Collect those pledges and be sure to register to qualify for the goody bag. Kick-off is at 1 p.m. in the Abe and Harriet Gold Atrium of the Engineering, Computer Science and Visual Arts Integrated Complex (EV, 1515 Ste-Catherine St. W.).

Every year Concordia staff, students and faculty members walk 6.5-kilometres from the Sir George Williams Campus to the Loyola Campus to raise money for student scholarships and bursaries.

It’s an opportunity to connect with old friends after the summer and the initial flurry of back-to-school activity. It is also a chance to get some exercise and raise money to support students.

“It’s all of the above. The event raises money and embodies the university spirit of being welcome to everyone whether they are faculty members, staff or students. It’s a true win-win situation,” explains Jang-Hwan Kwon, who chairs the Shuffle Advisory Committee. He has been an enthusiastic supporter of the university since he first studied at Concordia about 20 years ago. He is now a senior supervisor at Instructional and Information Technology Services.

The event starts at 1 p.m. on Friday, September 16 and culminates with the President’s picnic on the Loyola Campus. Participants can walk, skate, bike or jog the route; some bring their family, pets and friends, others shuffle with colleagues.

Since its inception in 1990 the Shuffle has raised more than $954,000, and organizers are hoping to bring the 22-year total to more than $1 million. More than 400 students have benefitted from the proceeds of the Shuffle. In 2000, the program expanded to include graduate students. Last year, 29 students received funds to support their studies.

In addition to pledges solicited by individual shufflers, several deans, directors, collective bargaining units and members of the university administration have opted to pledge a specific dollar amount for each person in their unit, department or Faculty who participates. Registration is possible on the website listed below, as well as at tables on both campuses between now and the big day.

Every shuffler who collects $25 in pledges will be entered in a series of prize drawings held over the next two weeks. Early registrants will also receive a Shuffle kit with a T-shirt and other goodies.

Questions can be addressed to shuffle@concordia.ca or by phone at 514-848-2424, ext. 3884.
