The Honorary Degree and Convocation Committee (HDCC) is seeking nominations for honorary degrees. While nominations are welcome throughout the year, nominations must be received by October 12 to be considered by the HDCC, a joint Board/Senate committee, at its fall meeting.

At the meeting, HDCC will review the nominees to evaluate whether they have sufficient stature and recognition to be eligible for an honorary degree. “We must ensure that the awarding of an honorary degree brings credit to Concordia University and upholds the values that lead to the advancement of learning and to the pursuit of greater knowledge,” states Danielle Tessier, HDCC secretary, in the call for nominations.

The candidates must either display eminence in a field of activity or profession, outstanding public or community service, or a significant connection or benefaction to the University. Current members of the Board of Governors, their family members, current members of the university community, are not awarded honorary degrees; nor are they usually awarded to holders of public office.

Those wishing to submit a nomination are encouraged to read the Guidelines for the Awarding of Honorary Degrees to familiarize themselves with the nomination process. They must then complete and sign the Honorary Degree Nomination Form and submit it to Ms. Danielle Tessier, HDCC Secretary, Room GM 801-23, Sir George Williams Campus, or via email attachment to Danielle.Tessier@concordia.ca.

Recent recipients of honorary degrees from Concordia include former Prime Minister Jean Chrétien, Canada’s Chief Justice Beverly McLachlin, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, singer Robert Charlebois, and astronaut Julie Payette.
