Concordia’s Stingers will help usher athletics into what has long been the stomping ground of musicians, artists, craftspeople and culture vultures: POP Montreal.

Initially developed as an indie music festival, POP Montreal has grown to include fashion shows, symposia, art and programming for children over four days, September 21 to 25. This year, they’re adding basketball.

For the first time, musicians will take to the basketball court against star athletes from Concordia and McGill in the POP vs. Jock Charity Basketball Game. The game will raise money for DJ Sports Club, a non-profit organization that offers sports programs to children.

The Jocks team will include Stingers Zach Brisebois, Decee Krah, James Clark, Sheldon Moore and Taylor Garner. The game was initiated by Arcade Fire’s Win Butler. His bandmate and Concordia alumna Régine Chassagne will provide organ accompaniment for the game.

When: Saturday, September 24 at 4 p.m.
Where: McGill Sports Centre (475 Pine Ave. W.)

Among the artists featured at the festival, Richard Kerr, a professor of film production in Concordia’s Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema, will present a work based on a 1975 Q & A session between Marshall McLuhan and students. Other representation from the Faculty of Fine Arts includes work by visual artist and alumna Karen Zalamea. Local sound mappers and music students Maxwell and Julian Stein will also be featured in the Art POP section of the festival.

Concordians are among the 300 musical acts performing during the festival, including Miracle Fortress and Plants and Animals. Arcade Fire, which recently won the Polaris Music Prize and has a number of Concordia graduates among its ranks, has added a free outdoor concert on September 22 to their sold-out September 21 show in the POP Montreal line-up.
