Team Concordia tops in Quebec
** UPDATE October 27: Since this story was posted, Linton Garner, Community Relations Coordinator, won the Team Leadership Award! Congratulations!
A team of 35 Concordians took part in the 20th CIBC Run for the Cure to support the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation — raising $12,959.30, surpassing the fundraising goal of $10,000.
The Montreal run was held in Parc Maisonneuve on Sunday, October 2. New this year was a national post-secondary challenge, where post-secondary institutions compete to raise the most for the cause.
While final challenge results are not yet posted, Team Concordia performed admirably and won the Johanne Rousseau New School Team Award, given by the O’Sullivan College Foundation for the most money raised by a first-year entrant in the event by an educational institution. Concordia’s total is the largest by a first-year entrant in the event’s 10-year history, and largest in the Quebec region. Concordia was also the first to surpass the $10,000 mark.
Linton Garner, Community Relations Coordinator and full-time student, is up for the Team Leadership Award.
Later this month, this and other awards will be given by CIBC to students who participated in the post-secondary challenge.
Members of Concordia’s organizing committee include Garner, Enza De Cubellis, Kathleen Perry, Lynn Roy, Sandra Margolian, Ellie Hummel, Susan Ross, Andrew Woodall and Kevin Dobie, with support from Andrea Renaud and Suzanne Giguère.
The committee offers its thanks to supporters Phillip Tanner and his Meta-Hook Arm-wrestling team, and Jon Webber for use of his club Bar Blizzarts. The arm-wrestling event on September 22 raised $400 for the cause.
Over $30 million was raised nationally by institutions and individuals. The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation funds, supports and advocates for relevant and innovative breast cancer research, meaningful education and awareness programs, early diagnosis and effective treatment, and a positive quality of life for those living with breast cancer.
