Stingers shine with Shrine Bowl win
The 25th annual Shrine Bowl had plenty of excitement and record setting performances as the Concordia Stingers beat the McGill Redmen in a 39 to 16 victory on Saturday, October 8.
Several Stingers players had extra reason to celebrate the win. Michael Harrington was the recipient of the John Gilday Memorial Trophy for outstanding offensive performance on the Stingers. He caught seven passes for 154 yards and a touchdown.
The Grant H. Peterson Defensive Award went to linebacker Max Caron for his 10 tackles, including a sack, and the interception. He led all tacklers in the game. Finally, Kris Robertson was named Special Teams Player of the Week by both the Quebec Football Conference and Canadian Interuniversity Sport for tying the Quebec conference record for punt returns with 214 yards, including one for a touchdown.
The Montreal Shrine Bowl had its origins when Stingers coach Skip Rochette and Grant Peterson, a Karnak Shriner, planned the event, modelled after similar games held in the U.S. This year was the 13th consecutive year that Concordia has hosted the event, with the 2011 win improving the Stingers Shrine Bowl record to 10 wins and 13 losses.
As of last year, the Shrine Bowl has raised more than $730,000 to benefit the Shriners Hospital for Children in Montreal.
