Get credits for hands-on learning
Good news for students across the university — the School of Extended Learning’s experiential and service-learning courses can now be taken for credit as electives.
Experiential learning courses can best be described as ‘learning by doing.’ They take a student-centred approach that promotes inquiry, analysis, critical reflection and creativity to address real-world problems and to better prepare students for study placements in community and organizational settings.
The courses consist both of in-class sessions and hands-on experience in the community. Students first learn skills to identify issues, collect data, imagine potential solutions, work collaboratively and explore how organizations work.
The practicum consists of a 90- or 120-hour placement over one semester. Students give their time and skills to a community organization in a supervised and supportive environment. Additional in-class seminar sessions provide opportunities for students to monitor and share their progress and learning.
Students in any discipline can practise service learning.
Experiential learning courses are available in the fall, winter and summer terms. Registration is now open for winter 2012.
