Dance community mourns Concordia teacher
Ken Roy, a part-time faculty member in the Department of Contemporary Dance, passed away Saturday, January 28, 2012, losing his battle against cancer. He was 49 years old.
His colleagues and students at Concordia University offer their condolences and sympathy to his family and close friends.
“The impact Ken had on the people he met and the emptiness he leaves in our hearts goes beyond what can be communicated with words. We are moved by the imprint his dance has made on those who studied with him, during his time at Concordia University,” wrote Michael Montanaro, chair of the Department of Contemporary Dance.
Roy was a vibrant performer who had worked with many of Montreal’s choreographers, including the renowned Jean-Pierre Perrault. It is with the same vitality that he inspired his students to demand the best of themselves.
Beloved by colleagues and students alike, his quick wit and sense of humour lit up the room and made working with him a joy. Roy leaves an everlasting mark on all those who have shared in the pleasure of his company.
A service in Ken’s honour will be held Saturday, February 11 at the Glasgow Square Theatre in Nova Scotia. A tribute to Ken’s career is being organized by members of the Montreal dance community and will be held this spring in Montreal. Family flowers only.
Donations may be made in Ken’s name to the Canadian Cancer Society or to a worthwhile performing arts initiative.
