Library assistant and alumna Faye Corbin has received the inaugural Freda Otchere Staff Recognition Award.

Dan Otchere, a long-time Concordia professor in the Department of Economics, created the award in the name of his late wife Freda to honour a Concordia library staff member whose commitment and professionalism reflect the values exemplified by Freda, a librarian at Concordia from 1978 until her death in 2004.

“Perseverance, generosity and compassion are among the qualities attributed to Faye Corbin and she is recognized for her extraordinary contributions to fundraising as a volunteer for the annual book fair, the Concordia golf tournament, the Shuffle and other initiatives,” says David Thirlwall, associate university librarian and chair of the selection committee.

An emotional Corbin accepted the award from University Librarian Gerald Beasley at a touching ceremony March 1 in the Friends of the Library Room at the R. Howard Webster Library on the Sir George Williams Campus. Among the 40 people in attendance was Professor Otchere.

“I’ve long believed in recognizing exceptional work, which is why I hope this award will serve as a reminder that all meaningful work for the university’s libraries — regardless of its nature — will not go unnoticed. Concordia has provided me and my family so much and it’s with great pride that I can give back,” says Otchere.

Corbin is a library assistant in Collections Services. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Concordia in 1983.
