Business students mingle with potential employers
Concordia business students had an opportunity to put their marketing and self-presentation skills to the test as they mingled with representatives from some of the city’s top firms at the 2012 Employer Recognition and Networking Cocktail, held May 3.
The annual event is organized by the John Molson School of Business’s (JMSB) Career Management Services (CMS), which provides career resources to current business students and JMSB alumni, with the ultimate aim of connecting them with potential employers.
Representatives from more than 30 companies were in attendance to meet Concordia’s business students. Among them were leading marketing agency Sid Lee, retailer Target Canada and financial services company Sun Life Financial.
“This year,” explained CMS Director Mai-Gee Hum, “we welcomed major companies from a variety of industries: banking, management consulting, capital markets, human resources management, marketing, pharmaceuticals and IT.
"The Employer Recognition and Networking Cocktail is an annual tradition at Career Management Services,” said Hum. “The event pays tribute to our employer partners and supporters in the business community. The event is also a great way for our students to build relationships with corporations while learning about industry trends and talent needs."
All the attendees, students and employers alike, were visibly delighted with the event. “It was a very enjoyable evening and very well organized,” says Ade Akin-Aina, Campus Recruiter for Target Canada. “It was wonderful to meet so many talented JMSB students and to engage in conversation with other recruiters. We will certainly be contacting some of the students we met to follow up on our discussions and, in some cases, to set up job interviews.”
"The employer recognition cocktail is a great initiative,” said MBA student Srikanth Sekar. “I had the opportunity to meet with senior executives from Fortune 1,000 companies first-hand and got to know about potential opportunities, specifically about the key aspects they are looking for from the candidates.
“The cocktail opened the possibilities of further communication with the senior executives, which is key for recent graduates in their job hunts. I hope to see CMS organizing many such amazing events in the coming years."
JMSB Interim Dean Alan Hochstein was also impressed. “The presence of so many remarkable corporate guests indicates that the relationship-building efforts of our Career Management Services team are paying real dividends,” said Hochstein.
“Events such as this one present a terrific opportunity to strengthen the vitally important ties between JMSB and the business community.”
