Dear members of the Concordia community,
You may have seen or heard media stories that appear to raise questions and concerns about Alan Shepard’s contract as president and the university’s management of its financial resources. Steps are being taken to correct any misconceptions that have arisen as a result of this media coverage.
I want to reassure you that the employment contract for our new president, which is a public document and has been given to the media, adheres in its entirety to our policies and standards. Furthermore, it is in keeping with the external audit of our human resources policies and practices for senior management that was conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP.
The compensation levels contained in Dr. Shepard’s contract are comparable to those found in the highly competitive global market for education sector executives who have such proven academic and administrative experience at the highest level. The selection of Dr. Shepard as president was the result of a national search process that included input from across our community.
Concordia remains one of the most prudent institutions of higher education in terms of the management of its financial resources and expenditures. We do not budget for deficits and our major infrastructure projects, such as the construction of our most recent research centres, are completed on time and on budget. In a spirit of continuous improvement, the university will continue to enhance its governance, and its human resources policies and practices for senior administrators and financial management.
I am grateful for your ongoing support of these goals and I look forward to working with the entire Concordia community to ensure the best possible future for Concordia.
Sincerely,
Norman Hébert Jr.
Chair, Board of Governors
