Stingers shake 10-year jinx
George Lovatsis scored two goals to lead the Concordia Stingers to a 6-5 victory over the defending national champion McGill Redmen in the 26th annual Corey Cup before an opening-night crowd of 519 at the Ed Meagher Arena.
It marked the first Corey Cup victory since February 2002 for the Stingers. With nine wins and a tie in the last decade, the Redmen took the Cup home for 10 straight years.
Concordia now owns an 8-15-3 record in the annual challenge match for university hockey supremacy in Montreal.
Other goal scorers for the Stingers were Olivier Jannard, Youssef Kabbaj, Kyle Kelly and Etienne Archambault, who is credited with the game-winner.
Goaltender Nick Champion turned away 43 of 48 shots to help pace the Stingers.
Concordia returns to the Ontario University Athletics conference action on Friday, October 12 at Carleton University. The Stingers return home Friday, October 19 for a 7:30 p.m. contest with the Ottawa Gee-Gees.
