Documentary wins two Emmys

A documentary produced by Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema professor Daniel Cross (BFA 91 and MFA 98) and the company he co-founded, EyeSteelFilm, won two Emmy Awards on October 1.

Last Train Home, already a multiple award-winner, took the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences categories of Best Documentary and Outstanding Business and Economic Reporting - Long Form. The documentary was broadcast in 2011 on PBS's showcase for independent documentaries, POV, where it’s currently available for streaming.

Through the experience of one family, Last Train Home tells the story of the world’s largest annual human migration — in which 130 million migrant Chinese factory workers travel by train to their home villages for the New Year — and the chaos it causes that extends beyond transportation issues.

This is the latest EyeSteelFilm production to receive critical acclaim. As well as Cross’s own awards for filmmaking, Concordia alumnus Yung Chang’s debut documentary Up the Yangtze earned a 2009 Genie for best documentary among its many accolades, and Inside Lara Roxx by MFA student Mia Donovan, also a debut film, was nominated in 2012 for a best documentary Jutra award.
