Concordia’s Board of Governors has renewed Gerald Beasley’s mandate as university librarian for a five-year term.

The board made the decision at its November 16 meeting, approving the evaluation committee’s recommendation to appoint Beasley to a second term. His first term began July 1, 2008 and ends June 30, 2013.

“Gerald has been highly successful in promoting innovation and a transformative, forward-looking vision for Concordia Libraries on a national scale,” says Concordia President Alan Shepard. “This is critical to our goal to continuously improve our libraries and support their vital role within the university community and in contributing to the knowledge-based economy.”

In its evaluation process, the committee held five meetings, received an external evaluator’s report and reviewed written submissions from the community. The committee noted that Beasley’s accomplishments during his first term included implementation of Spectrum, Concordia’s Open Access research repository, renovations to both the Vanier and Webster libraries, and a number of initiatives supporting students and faculty.

“I thank the committee members for their rigorous work in this review,” says Lisa Ostiguy, interim provost and vice-president, academic affairs, and evaluation committee chair.

“Fast-changing technology is fostering new modes of learning and research, and Gerald’s efforts have well positioned Concordia Libraries to capitalize on these transformations,” she adds. “Concordia’s library collections and services are especially well aligned with the university’s Academic Plan, and have had a positive impact on our community.”

During his first term, Beasley was the recipient of a Concordia Sustainability Champion award in 2011.

Beasley came to Concordia in 2008 from Columbia University, where he was director of the Avery Architectural and Fine Arts Library. His previous appointments include the positions of head librarian and associate chief curator at the Canadian Centre for Architecture. Beasley holds an MA in Library Studies from University College, and an MA and BA in English Language and Literature from Oxford University.
