Accolades for the week of November 26
The Quebec Writers' Federation holds an annual juried competition for published books by Quebec authors. The awards gala was held November 20 at the Cabaret Lion d'Or.
Alumnus Rawi Hage (BFA 98) won the Paragraphe Hugh MacLennan Prize for Fiction for his latest novel Carnival (House of Anansi Press). He won the same prize in previous years for his first two novels, De Niro’s Game and Cockroach.
Alumna Oana Avasilichioaei (MA 02) won the A. M. Klein Prize for Poetry for We, Beasts (Wolsak and Wynn Publishers).
And the Concordia University First Book Prize was awarded to Alice Petersen for All the Voices Cry (Biblioasis). The award in the university's name was created last year.
Shortlisted candidates also include Monique Polak (MA 84), Lori Weber (BA 89), Ronald Curtis (BA 87), Tom Abray (MA 00) — twice, Michael Lithgow (MA 07), Susan Gillis (MA 03) and Professor of English Mary Di Michele.
Congratulations to Csaba Nikolenyi, chair of the Department of Political Science, who is currently on a one-month visiting fellowship at the Australian National University (ANU) in Canberra. As part of the fellowship, granted by the ANU Centre for European Studies, he is giving a seminar on Political Institutions and Party Politics in Post-Communist Europe on November 27.
