Nghi M. Nguyen’s expertise is sought across the world. The professor in the Department of Building, Civil and Environmental Engineering recently delivered two risk-management seminars for employees of New York City’s Bureau of Engineering Design and Construction. Nguyen was invited by the Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP). The seminars took place about a week before hurricane Sandy dealt a knock-out punch to the city’s infrastructure, leaving millions of people without power and public transportation for weeks.

NYCDEP manages the city’s water supply, providing more than 1.1 billion U.S. gallons of water daily to more than 9 million residents of New York State, including 8 million in New York City. It is also responsible for managing the city’s combined sewer system, which carries both storm water runoff and sanitary waste, and for 14 sewage treatment plants located throughout the city.

Nguyen is expected to return to the Big Apple to provide further risk-management training and consulting. In February 2013, he will chair the risk management track at an international project management conference in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Congratulations to John Molson School of Business students Giuseppe Amato and Tatiana Zlotea who are among the 10 candidates from Quebec to rank on the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants Honour Roll for their performance on the Canada-wide 2012 CA Uniform Final Evaluation (UFE), the examination leading to certification for the CPA and CA designations. More than 640 students wrote the exam. Only 10 students from Quebec made the honour roll.

Congratulations to MFA student Betino Assa, who garnered an honourable mention in the 2012 RBC Canadian Painting Competition, an initiative that nurtures and supports promising new artists in the early stages of their careers when they need both recognition and financial support. Former Concordia undergraduate student Katie Lyle also received an honourable mention.

Concordia Stingers David Tremblay (wrestling) and Maxwell Caron (football) were honoured at the 27th RDS Gala du sport universitaire québécois by the Fondation de l’athlète d’excellence du Québec. Read the full story.
