Assisting professors with classroom technology

Technology is designed to make our lives easier. But using an unfamiliar control panel to get a projector working in tandem with a computer can be a little daunting for even the most tech-savvy professor — on the first day of the term in front of a full classroom.

 

With this in mind, Instructional and Information Technology Services (IITS) has released a series of instructional videos and PDF documents designed to facilitate the use of classroom technology by Concordia’s professors. 

 

The videos, hosted by IITS employee Mark Mazumdar, slowly and methodically take the viewer through the basic steps required to use the different classroom technology set-ups installed in Concordia’s classrooms. Each classroom has a separate page with a picture. Each different set-up gets a separate video and additional PDF diagrams outline the various control panels and their functions. 

 

The classroom technology pages are available on the IITS web pages. Professors can pick the classroom or classrooms in which they’re teaching, watch the corresponding videos, view pictures of the classrooms, and download the PDFs to use as a reference tool.

 

Mireille Rondeau, director of the IITS User Services, says the videos, PDFs and photographs are designed to help professors make a smooth transition to a new classroom, where they may find the technology unfamiliar. “We really wanted to help make those first days a bit easier,” she says.

 

Professors who run into a technical problem, or need additional help, can still visit one of the three IITS classroom technology depots, located in the Hall Building, the John Molson School of Business (MB) Building downtown, and the Central (CC) Building on the Loyola Campus. The location and phone numbers of the nearest depots are found on the individual classroom pages.
