Concordia President Alan Shepard met with some of Concordia's athletes recently for pizza and refreshments. He took the opportunity to thank them for their contribution to campus life, and for playing an important role in connecting the university to the surrounding community. Following the meet-and-greet, Shepard made his way to the Ed Meagher Arena to drop the puck in a game between the Concordia Stingers men's hockey team and Les Patriotes from Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières.

It’s time for NOW to check in with the Stingers basketball and hockey teams as they approach the midpoint of the regular season.

Basketball
The Concordia women’s basketball team started its season with a bang, winning the 45th edition of the annual Naismith Classic exhibition tournament at the University of Waterloo. Rookie forward Richelle Grégoire was named MVP, after averaging 17.3 points per game.

The team’s impressive performance was just a sign of things to come, as the Stingers started their regular season in November with four straight wins.

During the holiday break, the team earned a historic win over the number-one-ranked Windsor Lancers at the annual Concordia-Reebok Invitational Women’s Basketball Tournament. It marked the first time in the history of the Concordia women’s team that they had beaten the number-one-ranked team in the country.

Currently the Stingers are in a three-way tie for first place in the Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec (RSEQ) conference with a 6-2 win-loss record.

The Stingers’ next home game is this Thursday evening (January 24) at 6 p.m. against McGill.

The men’s basketball team also got off to a strong start to its season with three wins, including a decisive 90-62 home-opener victory against Laval. Following its most recent game, an 82-68 win over the first-place Bishop’s Gaiters, the Stingers sit in second place in the RSEQ rankings behind McGill. But with only two points separating first and second place, Concordia will attempt to tie things up tonight (January 24) against its number-one-ranked cross-town rival. The game will also be webcast on the Stingers homepage by SSN.

Hockey
Since beating the McGill Redmen in the 26th annual Corey Cup for the first time in 10 years, the Concordia Stingers men’s hockey team has had a tough time besting its opponents in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) East Division.

The Stingers have so far lost 14 of their 22 league games, and three more during shoot-outs or overtime. Currently they sit in second-to-last place in the division, just ahead of Royal Military College (RMC).

The Stingers will look to improve their record against third-place McGill University this Friday, January 25. Their next home game is against Queen’s University on Friday, February 8.
