Concordia seeks new ENCS dean
When Robin Drew’s mandate as dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science ends July 31, 2013, he will devote his efforts to teaching and research as a professor in the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering.
Drew was appointed dean and professor in August 2008. Prior to arriving at Concordia, he was a faculty member at McGill University for 28 years and served as a department chair for eight years. Drew is internationally renowned for his research on advanced materials and has contributed to more than 200 journal and conference publications.
In 2007, he was awarded a prestigious overseas fellowship at Churchill College, Cambridge. In June 2011, he was named Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, one of the highest recognitions of achievement in engineering in Canada.
“I thank Robin for his important contributions to ensuring that our Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science remains one of the most dynamic of its kind in Canada,” says Interim Provost Lisa Ostiguy.
During Drew’s term as dean, the Faculty research budget increased 25 per cent and graduate student enrolment rose nearly 30 per cent. Four industrial research chairs were established, funded in part by the Natural Sciences and Research Engineering Council of Canada (NSERC).
The Faculty also created the Concordia Institute for Water, Energy and Sustainable Systems and redefined the role of aerospace teaching and research through the Concordia Institute for Aerospace Design and Innovation (CIADI). Soft-skills training for students was augmented through the new Centre for Engineering in Society. The Faculty was also successful in renewing the accreditation of all of its programs.
An advisory search committee has been established to begin the selection process for a new dean, and the Concordia community will be kept informed of progress.
