Nine wrestlers advance to nationals

Concordia Stingers win qualifying competition, move to Canadian Interuniversity Sport championships

The 2013 Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) wrestling finals will be hosted by Western University in London, Ont. on March 1 and 2.

On the men’s side, head coach Victor Zilberman will have a strong class of eight wrestlers competing in the 10 weight classes. Concordia is the two-time defending national champion.

Leading the way will be four-time CIS gold medallist and 2012 Olympian David Tremblay (61 kg).

Also in qualifying were: Trevor Banks (54 kg), Noel Tremblay (57 kg), James Mancini (65 kg), Scott Schiller (68 kg), Gurveer Talhan (72 kg), Chris Kinsella (76 kg) and Jordan Steen (90 kg).

Only one wrestler will compete on the women’s side of the national championship. Second-year athlete Linda Morais, a bronze medallist in 2012, will challenge in the 63-kg weight class.

The wrestling team is coached by Zilberman, who has run the Concordia program since 1977. He has guided his athletes to 60 gold medals and eight team titles at the nationals. Since 1980, Concordia has won 127 medals. In addition, eight Concordia athletes have been named outstanding wrestler at the CIS tournament, and Zilberman has been named Coach of the Year on five occasions - in 2012, 2011, 2006, 1986 and in 1984.
