Remembering Joe Kelly
Concordia management professor Joe Kelly died peacefully with his sons Brendan and Michael and his daughter-in-law Margaret by his side, February 21 at the Lakeshore General Hospital. He was 84.
Kelly was born in the tiny town of Saltcoats on the west coast of Scotland to James Kelly and Margaret Macavoy. He went on to become a business professor at both Glasgow University and Strathclyde University, before moving with his family to Montreal in the summer of 1967. He spent one year at McGill's business school before moving to Concordia University, where he taught in the business faculty for nearly 30 years, lecturing in the MBA and PhD programs until he retired in 1996.
He published 12 acclaimed books on management and organizational behaviour, including a pioneering work in the field, the 1969 book Organizational Behaviour. His articles were published widely, including in the Harvard Business Review.
To honour Kelly after his retirement, the John Molson School of Business established the Joe Kelly Graduate Award.
It is given annually to a graduating PhD student whose research exhibits great imagination.
Kelly is survived by his wife Maureen (born McGinley), and his children Dermot (Cynthia), Michael (Margaret), Brendan (Johanne) and Louise (David), and his grandchildren Devan, Keane, Julia, and Matthew.
