Young joined the university in1976 and held several key positions with progressively greater responsibilities, including that of director, Facilities Operations, a position he held for 11 years.

In 2010, he was appointed interim director, Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) and later, when campus security was integrated into the EH&S department, Young assumed the role of senior director. He was responsible for overseeing the environmental health, safety, security, sustainability and emergency planning units, as well as the risk-management strategies for the Services Sector.

"With his extensive background, Rick was able to bring strategic insight and leadership to the Services Sector. The entire Concordia community benefitted from the wealth of hard-earned operational and institutional knowledge he brought to the position,” says Côté. “His remarkable proficiency, his calm demeanour and his commitment to the Services Sector will be missed. We thank him for his dedicated service and wish him all the best in his retirement."

As senior director, Young oversaw the development of Concordia’s initiatives related to chemical inventory, radiation, biosafety and laser safety, emergency management and industrial hygiene. He also ensured compliance with due diligence and safety regulations while simultaneously developing, promoting and evaluating the university’s environmental health and safety programs.

An organizational adjustment to the departments of Environmental Health and Safety and of Security will see the directors of both departments reporting directly to the vice-president, Services.
