Vladimir Pavlicik, associate director of Campus Recreation, is currently in Kazan, Russia, for the the Universiade: the 27th World University Summer Games. Pavlicik manages the Canadian men’s soccer team.

On July 10, the squad tied Brazil 1-1 to advance to the quarterfinals. It’s only the second time in its history that the Canadian team has made the playoffs.

Concordia Stingers rugby player Caleb Jordan is also representing Canada in the inaugural edition of the rugby sevens competition, which begins July 14. Four synchronized swimmers from Concordia — Rachel Fréchette, Rebecca Maule, Samantha Nealon and Lisa Sanders — are also competing in their sport’s Universiade debut.

Held every two years, the Universiade is open to athletes between the ages of 17 and 28 who are full-time students at a post-secondary institution, or graduated the preceding year. This summer’s event runs until July 17.
