Concordia started spreading the good word in print almost immediately after Loyola College and Sir George Williams University sealed their alliance on August 24, 1974.

The Transcript — the first in a long line of university newspapers that includes The Thursday Report and runs right up to the freshly redesigned News page at Concordia.ca — hit stands on September 12, 1974.

The front page was appropriately equitable. It featured a Sir George Williams student’s trip to China, a visit by the Royal Shakespeare Company to the Loyola Campus, and an article about how the two sports departments would soon merge into one. But, it adds, “the traditional rivalry between Warriors and Georgians will continue for another season.”

The Concordia University Magazine, first published in December 1977, was equally fair: initially, it put out separate editions for alumni of the two institutions.

Concordia University Magazine is still going strong. The Transcript lasted three months; it was replaced by FYI (January 1975-August 1977), then The Thursday Report (September 8, 1977-October 13, 2005) and finally The Concordia Journal (October 27, 2005-June 20, 2011). In 2011, the Journal went entirely online as the NOW page at Concordia.ca; by July 2013, it was pulling in close to 1 million readers a month.

On August 5, 2013, the university launched a streamlined website with an entirely new look and feel. The News page now features a clean, minimalist design, as well as technical features like a floating social media and sharing bar that “follows” readers as they scroll downwards.

The future is upon us!
