Concordia is throwing its doors wide open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, November 9. Close to 1,000 prospective students — with their friends and families in tow — are expected to attend the university’s annual Open House.

“Open House gives visitors a chance to see the face of Concordia, and to get to know our dedicated professors and staff,” says Matthew Stiegemeyer, director of student recruitment in Student and Enrolment Services. “Each of the Faculty experiences is unique.”

Prospective Concordians can tailor their Open House onsite, choosing from more than 100 workshops and presentations. The visitors will take in information sessions, find out about admission requirements, stop by Faculty-specific facilities, and join tours of the Sir George Williams and Loyola campuses.

They can also mingle with the university’s staff and current students: Open House is a chance for everyone to get acquainted.

“I know that in meeting with prospective students, I’ll learn a thing or two, too,” says Ron Ferguson, an associate professor of management at the John Molson School of Business.

An enthusiastic team of student volunteers and recruitment staff will be scattered throughout the two campuses to answer questions and show visitors around the university. With their yellow “Welcome Crew” T-shirts, they’ll be hard to miss.

What’s on offer at Open House?

Concordia’s four Faculties and School of Graduate Studies take the opportunity to showcase their work.

Ferguson is delivering a presentation on his graduate class in Organizational Behaviour. “Professors who believe in their program and their teaching should get involved. It’s a chance to get to know future students,” he says.

Concordia’s focus on experiential learning — a unique mix of volunteer work, study-abroad options and co-operative programs — will be proudly on display. The visitors will be encouraged to talk to department members and current students from the Institute for Co-operative Education at the Student Experience Showcase in the Henry F. Hall Building on the Sir George Williams Campus (1455 De Maisonneuve Blvd. W.) and the Richard J. Renaud Science Complex on the Loyola Campus (7141 Sherbrooke St. W.).

The John Molson School of Business (1450 Guy St.), the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science (1515 Ste-Catherine St. W.) and the Faculty of Arts and Science (1400 De Maisonneuve Blvd. W.) will also be promoting the many exciting Faculty-specific opportunities on the Sir George Williams Campus.

For those interested in finding out more about university life, Student Services is operating an information table in the J.W. McConnell Building. The Concordia Student Union will also be hosting a clubs and associations meet-and-greet all day on the mezzanine of the Henry F. Hall Building.

The Department of Fine Arts Portfolio Day, a special component of Open House where fine arts advisors offer feedback on applicants’ portfolios, will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. To register, head to Room EV-6.720 in the Engineering, Computer Science and Visual Arts Integrated Complex (1515 Ste-Catherine St. W.).

#CUOpenHouse13: Coming to a social media site near you

Open House won’t just be on campus this year. It’s also making its presence felt in the virtual world.

Cecilia Malazdrewicz, a recruitment information officer in Enrolment Services, says that Concordia is spreading the word through social media. “We’re going to be live-tweeting, sending out reminders about presentations and tours — what time they’re all happening at.”

On November 9, follow #CUOpenHouse13 for the latest updates.

Ultimately, Open House is about giving future Concordians a feel for the university, its student life and its community. “Students leave Open House feeling a connection. That has a lasting impression,” Stiegemeyer says.
