Concrete tobogganing really is as awesome as it sounds
Yes, concrete tobogganing really does exist, and at least one group of Concordians takes it very seriously.
Fourteen undergraduate engineering students and one graduate student have put the finishing touches on their ride for the 40th annual Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race at Western University in London, Ont. The event takes places from Wednesday, January 29 through Sunday, February 2.
To compete, each team has to design and build its own sleds, the running surface of which must be made entirely of concrete. The craft can’t weigh more than 300 pounds and must be fitted with a roll cage to protect its five riders. And every sled needs breaking and steering systems.
Teams are judged on the presentation, design, speed, handling and braking power of their toboggans. Last year, Concordia’s crew finished 14th overall, out of 21 teams. This year, with a new braking system in place and some race experience under their belts, they hope to bring home the top prize.
