Concordia.ca/students first went live in November and with the latest round of enhancements this week, it just got bigger and better.

So far the student hub is receiving rave reviews from its target audience. “It’s definitely user-friendly and easily navigable,” says MBA student David Spinner, adding that he appreciates the hub’s uncluttered appearance.

Content from four key service areas — Counselling and Development, Advocacy and Support, the Dean of Students Office, and Residence Life — has been added to the hub, which should make it even easier for graduates and undergraduates to find what they’re looking for.

“This is the culmination of our efforts to consolidate academic services, support and resources so students can find them easily,” says Lucy Niro, director of Web Communications. “Working with representatives from 15 different university offices, we were able to achieve a balance between representing the services they offer, and providing the necessary information in a way that makes it straightforward for students.”

Besides offering graduate and undergraduate pages, the student hub divides information into four main categories: Academic resources, Financial matters, Campus services, and Beyond the classroom.

This approach is innovative among university websites because it allows users to search for what they need via both topic- and office-based pages. The two ways of searching are interdependent: office pages feature relevant topics and topic pages link back to the relevant offices.

How user-friendly is the Concordia student hub?

Here’s an example.

Say you’re a new undergrad in search of information about bursaries:

  1. Go to the student hub.
  2. Click on the Financial Matters button.
  3. Click on Bursaries.
  4. On the next page, you’ll find all the information about the topic, including a database of available bursaries for new and returning undergraduates. There is also a link to the Financial Aids and Awards Office page, which contains a complete list of services it offers, and contact information.

Check out the new student hub  — and give us your feedback about the experience. If you’re interested in usability testing, write to wcmsproject@concordia.ca.
