In memoriam: Edward Maly

There will be a memorial service for Dr. Maly on Sunday, May 18, 2014 at 2 p.m. at the Rideau Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home, 4275 Sources Blvd., Dollard-des-Ormeaux.
Visitors are welcome to arrive at 1:30 pm. There will be a gathering after the service from 3 to 5 p.m.
The Concordia University community is deeply saddened by the passing of Edward Maly, retired Professor Emeritus in the Department of Biology, on April 3, 2014.
Maly received his PhD from Princeton University in 1968 under the supervision of the renowned ecologist Robert H. MacArthur. After an appointment at Tufts University, he joined Concordia’s Department of Biology in 1975 as assistant professor and was promoted to professor in 1987. He was active in ecological research throughout his career and taught a wide range of courses in ecology and organismal biology. He selflessly shared his passion for science with his numerous graduate students as a Fellow of the Science College, through his regular contributions and participation in the Pointe-Claire science fair, by organizing the aquatic ecology exhibit (annually since 1984), and through his many CEGEP site visits.
Maly played an important role in the life of the department, serving as graduate program director, associate chair and chair, and as the mentor for the ecology research group. “My colleagues and I in the Department of Biology are truly saddened by Ed’s passing,” says Patrick Gulick, chair of the Department of Biology. “Ed was with the department for more than three decades and taught many of the students who completed degrees in biology during his tenure. He was a dedicated and inspirational professor and colleague who will be sorely missed.”
