Forget about exams and deadlines. This weekend, it’s time for a bit of ghoulish fun.

1. MONSTROUS TRICKS

Screening: Monsters University | Maison culturelle et communautaire de Montréal-Nord | November 2 at 2 p.m.

Who knew? Before becoming the top “scarers” at the Monsters, Inc. factory, our favourite green, one-eyed monster and giant, furry, blue friend were university students.

In Pixar’s 2013 prequel to 2001’s Monsters, Inc., Mike Wazowski has his nose in the books while James P. “Sulley” Sullivan is a natural talent.

“You don’t need to study scaring, you just do it,” says Sulley.

2. A HAUNTING

Book launch: Earthling by Aisha Franz | Drawn and Quarterly Library | November 6 at 7 p.m.

Let metaphors and surrealist twists and turns take you on a journey through the lost dream worlds of childhood.

Franz’s debut graphic novel Earthling chronicles a day in the lives of two suburban sisters and their single mother who are trying to make sense of the aliens and alienation around them.

Fun fact: Aisha Franz was named after an elephant from TV. You could always ask her which one.

3. THE SECRETS OF SFX

Exhibition: Secrets and Illusions (The Magic Of Special Effects) | Cinémathèque québécoise | Permanent

Ever find yourself watching a movie and wonder: how did they do that? The time has come to find out.

This exhibition explores the history of the special effects industy from Méliès to Kubrick, deep space to dripping blood. Find out how they’ve moved film forward, and the fascinating technology that has been invented as a result. Plus, there’s a Concordia connection.

4. ZOMBIE PARTY!

Zombie Apocalypse | Concordia Greenhouse | October 31 from 7 to 10 p.m.

It was bound to happen sooner or later. Mandrake zombies have taken over the rooftop greenhouse on the 13th floor of the Henry F. Hall Building. Suit up (bring a costume) and party with them!

Now that they have been have been eating the brains of any poor student unfortunate enough to walk into the greenhouse, they’ll be spinning dark classic rock, alt and electro swing to get the glass panels shaking.

Be part of the destruction!
