A few years into your career? Check in with HR
This is the second article in a series about the services and support Human Resources offers staff and faculty at different stages of their career. Watch Cspace in the coming weeks for the rest of the series.
Now that you’ve been at Concordia for a few years, you’ve gotten to know the campus, your job and your colleagues. Perhaps you’re looking for ways to invest in the rest of your career.
Here is a list of services HR offers to help you do so:
1. Capitalize on professional development opportunities
The Employment and Organizational Effectiveness team has created a learning and development calendar to offer employees opportunities to hone their skills throughout their careers at the university. In fact, Concordia is one of the organizations recognized by the Government of Quebec for its commitment to investing in the skills development of its workforce.
The 2015 Learning and Development Calendar is currently in development. Watch this space for an announcement about new courses and workshops.
2. Save for retirement
Pension plan
It’s never too early to start thinking about retirement. As an employee of Concordia — whether you are a faculty or staff member — you can contribute to the Pension Plan for the Employees of Concordia University and save for the future.
Why not take this opportunity to review your situation in the pension plan? The pension projection calculator on pension@ccess will help you obtain estimates of your pension at various retirement ages.
Other savings plans
HR also offers staff and faculty complementary ways to save, such as the Group RSP and the opportunity to purchase Canada Savings Bonds in the fall.

3. Review your benefits entitlements
Life events that take place during your career can have an effect on your benefits. Take a look at the work & life events Cspace page to see if you need to make any changes. To review or make changes to your benefits, contact benefits@concordia.ca.
4. Review your labour agreement and HR policies
There are many different kinds of benefits available to Concordia staff and faculty. Take the time to review exactly what you are entitled to. Each person’s situation is different, so for a comprehensive list of the benefits available to you, like bereavement leave, professional development, or parental leave, review your labour agreement.
If you do not have a labour agreement, review the HR policies to find out what is available to you.
5. Get support
Life isn’t always simple, but getting support is. The Employee Assistance Program (EAP) offers services and support to help you cope with the demands of everyday life. The EAP is a confidential counselling and information service for staff and faculty at Concordia and their immediate family.
If you’re eligible for health benefits at Concordia, EAP services in English and French are available to you at no cost. Services are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, from wherever you are in the world.
