Derek Acland (1937-2015): Professor emeritus, sportsman

Concordia mourns the passing of longtime accounting professor

Derek Acland, professor emeritus in the Department of Accountancy at the John Molson School of Business, passed away on Monday, March 16 at the age of 77.

“Derek was an active member of the department from 1983 to 2001,” says Charles Draimin, department chair. “We extend our deepest condolences to his family.”

Acland is survived by his wife, Joan, his three sons, their wives and seven grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Anne. His wife, Joan Acland, retired in 2004 from her position at Concordia as an Associate Professor of Art History in the Faculty of Fine Arts. His daughter-in-law, Haidee Wasson, is an Associate Professor of Film Studies in the Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema. His son Charles Acland holds the Concordia University Research Chair in Communication Studies.

Acland was born in Toronto in 1937. He completed a bachelor of commerce degree at Queen's University, where he played varsity hockey, in 1959. He worked for Price Waterhouse until 1962, when he became a chartered accountant. The following year, he earned an MBA from Queen’s. In 1974, he was awarded a PhD in business administration from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.

Prior to joining Concordia, Acland worked as a professor at the Queen’s School of Business and at Carleton University. He retired in 2001.

A service and reception are to be held Friday, March 20 at 2 p.m. St. James Anglican Church, 642 Rue Main, Hudson, Quebec.
