A tool kit for time-pressed managers

John Molson Executive Centre’s new Advanced Management Program aims to provide managers with fundamental business skills in 14 weeks

Many, if not most, managers don’t have a business degree. The typical path to management involves working as a professional for a number of years before being promoted to head up a team of professionals.

This fall the John Molson Executive Centre will introduce its Advanced Management Program, which will cover fundamental principles across business disciplines in a condensed form.

Designed for managers who do not have the time to complete a degree or diploma, the program is a particularly good fit for those who wish to successfully transition to a role that involves a broader range of functional areas, says Stéphane Brutus, the JMSB associate dean responsible for the Executive Centre.

“If we take an engineering firm as an example, most managers are engineers who have never studied accounting, marketing or finance but might now need to have an understanding of those areas in their job. This program can provide them with an introduction to these disciplines in a very short amount of time.”

Brutus says that the program’s subject matter is certain to be relevant to practicing managers, as it will focus on the latest industry trends. Courses will be taught by JMSB faculty, as well as industry experts.

Lasting 14 weeks, the Advanced Management Program will combine 11 in-class sessions with webinars and other distance-learning tools, and will culminate in a case competition that simulates a real business situation.

“We believe strongly in experiential learning at JMSB, and we’re good at it,” Brutus says. “So in putting this program together, we saw an opportunity to leverage that strength in ways that will help develop the creativity and decision-making skills that are essential to good management.”
