A 'nugget of knowledge' for women with cancer
An average of 524 people in Canada are diagnosed with cancer every day. With this disease touching so many lives, it’s no wonder so many individuals and organizations are inspired to help.
On April 26, nine women affected by cancer, along with their loved ones, got together at Concordia’s PERFORM Centre to participate in a healthy cooking class, a meditative yoga exercise and a talk on the benefits of physical activity.
“It was a reminder that we have to be mindful of what we put in our bodies,” said one of the women, remarking on the benefits of the healthy-cooking class.
CanDonate, a non-profit organization which gives free wigs to people suffering from cancer, partnered with PERFORM to produce the event.
Professional wig-maker Laurie Brown founded CanDonate in 2005. Initially, the charity collected hair donations to make natural wigs for children, but has since expanded its program to provide hairpieces for women and men.
CanDonate’s mission, “to restore hope and esteem for people with cancer in Quebec,” complements the PERFORM Centre’s objective of exchanging knowledge and innovation with the community.
A hub of preventative health research, PERFORM uses best practices and the latest research findings to educate and translate knowledge to its visitors, including those at the CanDonate event.
“We were extremely happy to host these wonderful women, and provide an experience that was not only joyful but informative to help them along on their journey, says Marion Lowe, manager of Community Engagement at the PERFORM Centre. “Our wish is that each one took home a nugget of knowledge,”
