Provincial recognition for Stingers football stars
Today was a celebration for the Concordia Stingers Football team, as two of its players received two of the provincial league's highest honours at the Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec (RSEQ) conference in Quebec City this morning.
Concordia Stingers quarterback Trenton Miller was named RSEQ MVP and presented the Jeff Russel Memorial Trophy for his outstanding performance.
The 21-year-old MBA student from Buffalo, New York arrived in Quebec just last spring. During his first eight games with the Stingers, Miller completed 204 of 309 passes for 2,384 yards and 20 touchdowns. These statistics are all the more impressive given that it was Miller’s first season playing Canadian football, which varies from American football in several prominent ways.
"He's a special person in the classroom and on the field," says head coach Mickey Donovan. "I think if he had four or five years in the CIS (Canadian Interuniversity Sport), he would break every record. I feel he can be the best quarterback to ever come out of CIS football."
At the same conference, wide receiver Yanic Lessard was named RSEQ top offensive rookie.
The first-year Economics student from Ste. Julie, Quebec caught 50 passes for 728 yards and eight touchdowns this season. He led the RSEQ in several categories including touchdowns scored, total receiving yards and average yards per game.
"He's one of the toughest and hardest working guys I've ever seen,” says Donovan. “He had to deal with some injuries this season, and he never complained. He refused to take one rep off even though he was hurting.”
Naturally, Lessard ended up being one of quarterback Trenton Miller's favourite targets during the season. That’s good news for the Stingers as the promising duo will be on the roster for another two years.
"It's scary to think about what those two can do together,” says Matt Connell, offensive co-ordinator.
