MacKenzie began working at Concordia in 1975, as the administrative assistant to the chair of the Department of English, and went on to fill many more roles over his 30-year career. They included editor of the Concordia undergraduate calendar, assistant director of international students and foreign student exchange, counsellor of senior admissions and assistant registrar.
During this time, MacKenzie also earned two graduate diplomas from Concordia — in writing and translation, and in institutional administration.
“He was a very intelligent, focused and detail-oriented person,” says Marie-Claire Newman, manager of government reporting and statistics. “Bruce was very appreciated by his colleagues.”
In addition to his work, MacKenzie represented Concordia on two subcommittees of the Conférence des recteurs et des principaux des universités du Québec (CREPUQ), liaising with Quebec university representatives and the ministry of education.
“Bruce was a keen supporter of education and enthusiastic about the inter-university group,” says Newman. “He loved to share ideas and look for common solutions.”
Mackenzie retired from his role as director of Government Reporting in 2008.
A memorial reception will be held in Bruce’s memory. Please contact Marie-Claire Newman at marie-claire.newman@concordia.ca for more information.
