UPDATE: Due to weather conditions, the BBQ scheduled for October 2 will now take place October 3 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

In addition, the October 4 training session at the Loyola Campus has been cancelled.

Do you know what to do in case of an emergency on campus? What about a hazardous waste spill in a lab?

From October 2 to 5, Concordia will be holding its second Campus Safety Awareness Week to draw attention to these types of issues and how best to respond in an emergency situation.

As part of the continuing campaign, Campus Safety: Be Informed, Get Connected, this year Concordia’s Security Team has joined forces with Environmental Health and Safety and IT Services. Hot topics will not only include physical safety, but also IT security and safe practices in the lab and workplace.

October 2: Kiosks and a BBQ

Ever wonder what it would be like to wear a haz-mat suit or how long it would take to put on a fire fighter’s uniform? On October 2, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., you’ll get your chance.

Come to the Henry F. Hall (H) Building terrace and check out kiosks, gather useful safety information, enjoy some freebies and undertake the fire fighter and security challenges. You can also enter to win one of two $50 pre-paid credit card prizes.

If you have Alertus + mobile app downloaded on your phone, you can even get free hotdogs and a drink.

Alertus +

Alertus + is a free alert system that sends push notifications to the university community during significant incidents — like, say, campus-wide closures after a 40-centimetre snowfall.

The app is available for iOS, Android and Blackberry 10.2.1 or later and can be downloaded from the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store. It’s quick to install, takes minimal storage and the data transfer is negligible. Once downloaded, make sure to enter the organization code “concordia” or the app won’t work.

Don’t forget to keep this app up to date so that it functions properly in an emergency situation.

October 3 to 4: Training and info sessions

Become CERTified

Want to become a member of the Concordia Emergency Response Team (CERT)? On Wednesday, October 3 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., a certification session will be taking place in room CD on the 9th floor of the John Molson (MB) Building on Sir George Williams Campus.

A training will also take place on Loyola Campus on Thursday, October 4 from 1 to 4 p.m. in room 110 of the Loyola Jesuit Hall and Conference Centre (RF Building).

The CERT is made up of Concordia staff and student volunteers that assist during evacuations and other emergencies that may occur on campus. There are no shifts or off-campus commitments. Team members go about their regular activities on campus and only assume their CERT responsibilities in the event of an emergency in the building they are in.

As a CERT volunteer you will receive free CPR/first aid training and certificates, fire prevention training and CERT training. You can also request a confirmation letter for voluntary service.

Learn about emergencies

We don’t plan to fail, but we often fail to plan. At an institutional level, Concordia undertakes preparedness and prevention activities to deal with a variety of different emergency situations. Concordia’s Security Team encourages students, faculty and staff to do so as well.

Would you know what to do in an emergency situation? Come learn some tips and tricks from Concordia’s security experts on Wednesday, October 3 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in room CD on the 9th floor of the MB Building. A subsequent seminar takes place on Thursday, October 4 from 10 to 11 a.m. in room 110 of the RF Building.

Brush up on IT Security

From banking to shopping, most of our day-to-day transactions can now be accomplished with the click of a mouse. While convenient, this also makes our personal information vulnerable.

Come learn some valuable tips and tricks from Concordia’s IT security experts on how to keep your information private, avoid internet scams and keep your computers and cellphones safe.

Information sessions will be taking place on Wednesday, October 3 from 9 to 10 a.m. and 1 to 2 p.m. in room F on the 9th floor of the MB Building. A subsequent information session will take place on Thursday, October 4 from 9 to 10 a.m. and 1 to 2 p.m. in room 130 of the RF Building.

October 5: Alertus + seminar

Alertus and Concordia will be teaming up on Friday, October 5 to host a seminar entitled, Developing a Holistic Approach to Emergency Management and Response.

Taking place between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. in room CD on the 9th floor of the MB Building, the seminar will cover topics such as managing bomb threats and other hoaxes to case studies. Complimentary breakfast and lunch will be served and networking opportunities will follow.
