Legislative elections in France

Posted on June 27, 2024

The legislative elections in France will take place on Sunday, June 30 and Sunday, July 7.

According to two of the latest polls, reported in various media, the Rassemblement National (RN) and its allies will win between 35.5% and 36% of the vote, ahead of the Nouveau Front Populaire (an alliance of left-wing parties) and the presidential camp.

Chedly Belkhodja, professor and researcher at Concordia University’s School of Public and Community Affairs, can comment on the issue of classifying the Rassemblement National (RN) as an extreme right-wing party, and can discuss questions such as:

  • What's at stake in this election?
  • Who are the candidates and what are their respective strengths?
  • At what point can a party be defined as far-right?
  • What is the distinction between a populist party and a right-wing or far-right party?
