The bench-to-bedside pharma strategist

Sherin Al-Safadi, MBA 10, PhD 14
By Charlie Fidelman

“The PhD in neurobiology was the cost of entry into the pharmaceutical industry and as I grew into leadership roles, the MBA propelled me to the forefront.”

As a builder of bridges between academia and the pharmaceutical industry, Sherin Al-Safadi is driven by translational research and true bench-to-bedside health care.

Based in New York as global medical affairs oncology strategy lead at Bayer, Al-Safadi says many patients don’t have access to medication.

“Our job, as someone who works in pharma, is not only to deliver data and science behind the drug, but to make sure patients can get it through reimbursement and adequate coverage.”

On the calling to Big Pharma and oncology

“During 13 years of study (MSc, MBA and PhD) I followed a vision to break into the industry. Last year, a week before the world shut down, my mother was diagnosed with stage IV non-small cell lung cancer. That instantly gave me meaning for why I had been put on this path.”

Concordia’s road to success

“The PhD in neurobiology was the cost of entry into the pharmaceutical industry and as I grew into leadership roles, the MBA propelled me to the forefront. But extracurricular activities, student associations, case competitions, mentorship programs and exchanges brought real-world experiences and skills.”

Inspiring professor

Shimon Amir, my PhD supervisor, for his unparalleled support on every front. He played a key role in giving me the strength and confidence I needed and shaped me into the person I am today.”

Proudest moment

“Helping patients gain access to a new cancer medication that was still not publicly available at the time. One of them wrote a thank you note, it was so touching that it made my eyes water. I shared it with my team: This is why we’re here!”

Career challenges

“Learning to let go of expectations. It’s counterintuitive.”

Sports

“Kiteboarding, semi-professional kickboxer. It’s not about the wins and losses; martial arts lessons from the ring translate to the personal and professional world.”

Words of wisdom

“Be genuine and true to who you are.”

Giving back

“Co-founder and president of Amal Foundation, a non-profit organization that improves the quality of life of children with physical and mental impairments.”
