A triptych of three dogs Bowie, Milo and Cleo will help raise funds for students at this year’s Shuffle fundraiser.

The Concordia Shuffle, the university’s annual 6.5-kilometre walkathon between the Sir George Williams and Loyola campuses, returns on September 20, 2024. Welcoming both human and furry friends, it’s an opportunity to give back, support student initiatives and enjoy quality time with pets.

Over the years, many Shufflers have brought along their canine companions. Read the stories of three participants who share how their dogs help make the Shuffle a truly unique experience.

Andie and Cleo

Andie Zeliger, BA 88, academic staff manager in the Office of the Provost and Vice-President, Academic, will Shuffle with Team CU at the Finish Line. For Zeliger, the annual fundraiser is the perfect blend of exercise and community building. She’s excited to walk with her dog, Cleo, and catch up with friends.

“It’s always fun to see people’s reactions as we parade through the neighborhoods,” says Zeliger. “Plus, it’s a great way to spread the word about the Shuffle!” Her advice for first-timers? “Pace yourself and don’t forget water — for you and your pet.”

Cleo, who turned 10 in March, is gearing up for her 10th Shuffle. “We were part of the small crew that Shuffled in September 2020 [during the pandemic],” Zeliger recalls. Cleo, who loves people almost as much as she loves treats, is eagerly anticipating the post-walk barbecue.

“Fair warning to anyone who’s fed her before — she hasn’t forgotten you!” Zeliger adds with a laugh.

Sylvain-Jacques and Bowie

Buzz greets Sylvain-Jacques and Juneau at Shuffle 30.

Sylvain-Jacques Desjardins, BA 97, director of communications in University Advancement, first teamed up with his standard poodle, Juneau, to raise funds in 2019.

To lend a helping paw, Juneau even had his own Shuffle page. “Juneau raised $350 for the Shuffle and was quite proud,” says Desjardins. “He planned on making a comeback in 2024, but unfortunately his arthritis has slowed him down.”

This September, Desjardins plans to Shuffle with Juneau’s younger sibling, Bowie, instead.

“Shuffling with pets adds a fun dynamic to the event,” says Desjardins. “Pets can help raise awareness for the walkathon and, in some cases, bring in added revenues. And that’s a great thing.”

Sandra and Milo

Sandra Margolian, Concordia’s public art lead, Shuffles with purpose. Having benefited from bursaries herself, she knows just how life-changing they can be for students.

This year, she’s joining the Library’s Bibliotrekkers team, raising funds for scholarships and bursaries, all while enjoying the event’s lively atmosphere.

Milo, Margolian’s dog, first Shuffled as a puppy in 2017. Despite his shy nature and tendency to steer clear of other dogs and kids, Milo’s cuteness is sure to win hearts — and hopefully inspire donations.

“We don’t usually do matching outfits,” Margolian says, “but I might make an exception with this year’s Shuffle gear!”

Shuffling since six months old and ready for her 10th edition of the fundraiser, Cleo never forgets a friendly face — or a tasty treat!

Did you know? This year, the Shuffle kicks off at the EV atrium. Dogs must be leashed during the walk and barbecue. Only service animals are allowed inside buildings.
