Stacey has long blonde hair and wears a glittery blue one-shoulder dress. “The urban, city-based education that Concordia provided really made me more savvy, worldly and independent. Those experiences have stayed with me and shaped who I am today.”

Stacey Jackson, BA 91, is a multifaceted singer, television presenter, author and entrepreneur. Her journey, she says, is a testament to the belief that “it is never too late to live your dreams.”

As a teenager in Montreal, Jackson performed in bands and thrived at Concordia’s Department of Communication Studies. Her professional path took a significant turn when she secured an internship at CBS News in New York, and later a job as a publicist at Lifetime Television in the city.

After a decade in the Big Apple, Jackson moved to London, United Kingdom, where she balanced family life with her creative aspirations.

At 40 and as a mother of four, she reignited her musical career when she recorded an album for the charity Music for Youth. Though the album initially seemed to fade into obscurity, a remix of her song “Band of Gold” became a dance anthem and propelled Jackson into the spotlight and on stages around the world.

Jackson followed up this success with “Live It Up,” a song that featured a verse from legendary rapper Snoop Dogg. Her latest album, Super Woman, came out in November and will be supported by a tour.

Jackson’s talents extend beyond music. As a television presenter, she hosted 54 episodes of Stacey Jackson in the 80s on Sky Music. “Flipside,” the show’s theme song, written by Jackson, became a hit on the Global Digital Radio chart in 2022.

As an entrepreneur, Jackson also founded Staefit, a line of activewear for women.

What’s more, Jackson’s debut novel and e-book, the semi-autobiographical How A Gangsta Rapper Made Me A Better Mom, co-written with Ruth Elkins, was released in 2024.

“Life is too short not to take risks and try new things,” says the Great Concordian. “Embrace every opportunity because you never know where it might lead you!”

When you reflect on your time as a Concordia student, what stands out?

Stacey Jackson: Concordia offered a hands-on learning experience that was on another level. What stands out the most is the cutting-edge Communications Studies program.

Back in the late ’80s, it was all about the reel-to-reel recording studios and splicing tapes with razor blades. I remember the thrill of sitting in those tiny closet-sized studios, learning and living the craft simultaneously. It felt so exclusive and special to be a part of that.

The urban, city-based education that Concordia provided really made me more savvy, worldly and independent. Those experiences have stayed with me and shaped who I am today.

What are some of the factors that have enabled your success?

SJ: My journey has been all about embracing creativity and seizing opportunities. From performing as a singer-songwriter to working in television, every experience has been invaluable.

I love creating something from nothing, whether it’s a song, a clothing design or a book. This willingness to take risks and push myself creatively has been so crucial.

What advice do you have for students who may want to follow in your footsteps?

SJ: When a door opens, be fearless and go in! It doesn’t have to be the path you initially envisioned. The skills and experiences you gain from different opportunities can lead you to some unexpected, and wonderful, places.

For example, working in television marketing and PR helped me immensely when it came time to produce and release my own music. Confidence grows with experience, so don’t be afraid to suck at something new. Keep trying, keep learning and embrace the journey.

How does it feel to be a Great Concordian?

SJ: Honestly, I still get goosebumps thinking about it. Being named one of the 50 Great Concordians is such an honour. Out of the thousands of talented people who have walked through Concordia’s doors, to be chosen as one of the 50 is incredibly humbling. I’m truly honoured to be in the company of so many brilliant individuals. It’s a thrilling feeling, one that makes me feel really chuffed, as they say here in England!

Take pride in our Great Concordians!
