Two members of the Concordia community were among 88 appointments to the Order of Canada, announced this week by Governor General of Canada Mary Simon.

The Order of Canada, the country’s most notable distinction, recognizes people across all sectors of society who have made extraordinary and sustained contributions to the nation.

Congratulations to these accomplished members of our community who were named Companions to the Order of Canada:

Dominique Lemieux, BFA 81

Dominique Alice Lemieux, who passed away on November 27, 2024, was a world-renowned costume designer. Part of the Cirque du Soleil creative team, she made a mark with unique designs nationally and internationally for more than three decades. Some of her creations, notably for the shows Mystère and Alegria, have continued to inspire for more than 20 years.

Fabienne Colas, DFA 24

A significant figure in Canada’s cultural diversity, Fabienne Colas has dedicated herself to the promotion of diversity and inclusion in film, art and culture, in Canada and abroad. Through the Fabienne Colas Foundation, creator of the Montreal International Black Film Festival, she has been a force behind the creation of incubators, training programs, events and festivals that have showcased thousands of artists of African descent across North America. Colas was awarded an honorary doctorate by Concordia in June 2024.
